The Rhythm of Becoming
A reflection on trusting your timing, honoring growth, and the healing power of music
Introduction
There are times in life that invite us to pause…not because something big just happened, but because something meaningful has been quietly taking shape all along.
Moments where you look at someone you love…and realize they’re no longer who they once were.
They’ve grown. They’ve stretched.
They’ve become someone entirely their own.
And somehow… you were there for all of it.
Not shaping every step, but witnessing it…guiding when you could…and learning alongside them in ways you never expected.
And in those moments, you begin to see how their journey has shaped you too.
Honoring a Life Lived in Its Own Time
Recently, my son celebrated his birthday, and it brought me into a space of reflection.
Not just on who he is today…but on who he has always been.
From the very beginning, he has done life in his own way.

In his own time. On his own terms.
Even when he felt nervous or unsure, he didn’t let that stop him. He faced it and moved through it.
As a child, everything came down to when he felt ready.
He potty trained himself.
He discovered his love for reading on his own.
He chose when he was ready for new experiences.
And that way of being carried into every part of his life.
School didn’t always look traditional…but it was always aligned.
He navigated challenges in his own way, and when he was ready, he shifted.
He returned to school full-time, graduated with his friends, and stepped into his next chapter.
He applied to colleges on his own, chose to move over 3,000 miles away to Alaska, and now he’s preparing to study abroad overseas.
And I find myself in awe of him.
Because he has a vision for his life…and he follows it.
Even when it’s uncomfortable. Even when it brings uncertainty.
He still goes.
And in doing so, he has shown me something we all need to remember:
You don’t have to follow anyone else’s timeline. You can trust yourself. You can move when you’re ready. And you can create a life that feels true to you.
The Music That Connects Us
One of the ways we’ve connected most throughout the years is through music.
As a teenager, he explored it in a way that was completely his own.
One year, he set a goal to listen to an album a day for an entire year—nearly 365 albums across every genre.
What I loved most…was that he stayed open.
And in a lot of ways, that inspired me to do the same.
We’ve shared road trips, concerts, and playlists. We’ve introduced each other to music we may not have chosen on our own.
And even when our tastes differ…there’s a respect there.
Music became more than something we listened to. It became something we experienced.
Music as a Form of Healing
Music has been a constant in my life.
A place I return to…again and again…through different seasons.
When I was younger and going through difficult moments, I would lie on my floor for hours, just listening.
Sometimes crying. Sometimes just sitting with whatever I was feeling.
Music met me where I was…even when I didn’t have the words.
During my divorce, I found myself deeply connected to Taylor Swift’s music.
Her lyrics reflected what I was feeling and helped me process it.
Over the years, I’ve created “anthems”—songs that represent the season I’m in. Something to return to when I need grounding.
And during my New Year’s walks, music becomes something even deeper.
There was a time I listened to Ludovico Einaudi’s Experience on repeat for hours.
It pulled me into a moving meditation—step by step, breath by breath.
Music has a way of holding you there…and helping you move through.
Expanding Through New Experiences
Recently, I stepped outside of my usual preferences and went to a metal concert with my partner.
It wasn’t my typical genre, but instead of shutting it down…I leaned into it.
I let go of needing to understand everything and allowed myself to feel it.
The energy. The rhythm. The intensity.
And while it may not be something I listen to every day…I can appreciate it.
Because music resonates differently for everyone.
And there’s something powerful about allowing people to connect to what speaks to them—without judgment.
The Things That Light the Way
When I think about what guides us…what quietly illuminates the path forward…
music has been one of those lights for me.
It has been there in some of my hardest moments and in some of my most beautiful ones.
And in a different, but more meaningful way…
so has my son.
Through the way he lives…the way he trusts himself…the way he continues forward, even when he’s unsure…
he has shown me what it looks like to follow your own light.
A Moment to Reflect
As I come back to where this all began…to this idea of honoring…
I’m reminded how important it is to acknowledge the people, experiences, and moments that shape us.
Take a moment to reflect…
Who in your life has inspired you?
What has carried you through?
What has been a light along your path?
What songs have held you, understood you, or helped you feel something you didn’t quite have words for?
Take a moment to honor it.
Because those things…they matter more than we often realize.
With Love and Gratitude,
Amber
