The Spaces We Open

Creating Space for What Matters

There is something beautiful about giving ourselves room.

Forest trail winding between lush green ferns and towering trees, symbolizing creating space for what matters.

Room to breathe a little deeper, linger a little longer, and allow an experience to become part of us before moving on to whatever comes next.

I've been thinking about that quite a bit lately.

After returning from Costa Rica, I found myself wanting a little more time before settling back into the familiar rhythm of everyday life. Not because I was trying to hold on to my travels, but because I wanted to give everything I'd experienced an opportunity to settle.

So I found my way back onto the trails.

Back among the trees, breathing in the fresh air and reconnecting with Mother Earth.

There is a familiarity I feel when I'm outdoors that allows me to settle into myself without much effort. I can simply walk, appreciate the beauty around me, and enjoy being exactly where I am.

And somewhere along those trails, I began recognizing something I wanted to carry into my everyday life.

I wanted to become more intentional about the spaces I was creating within it.

Not necessarily to fill them with something new.

Sometimes, simply to allow them to remain open.

The Space Between Experiences

I've always appreciated those moments between one experience and the next.

The time when something meaningful has happened, but life hasn't quite returned to its usual rhythm.

There can be a temptation to move immediately into whatever comes next. Responsibilities are waiting, routines resume, and before long, even the most meaningful experiences can begin to feel like something we've already moved beyond.

But I've come to appreciate the value of giving those experiences a little room.

During my time on the trails, I wasn't looking for another revelation or trying to extend the feeling of being away.

I was enjoying the opportunity to be present in another beautiful place.

And perhaps that was what made the time feel so meaningful.

I wasn't asking anything of it.

I was simply allowing myself to experience life as it was unfolding.

Sometimes the space between experiences gives us an opportunity to recognize what we want to carry forward.

And sometimes what we discover isn't a desire to change our lives entirely.

It's a desire to experience the lives we already have a little differently.

Returning With Different Eyes

One of the things I noticed when I returned to my familiar routines was how differently I was experiencing certain interactions.

Nothing particularly unusual was happening around me.

Life was continuing much as it always had.

Wooden bridge extending into a peaceful forest, representing the transition between experiences and creating space for reflection.

But I was becoming more aware of the energy moving through even the smallest moments of my day.

We all have our own experiences, frustrations, and concerns. There are times when we need someone to listen, and times when we're the ones offering that space to someone else.

I've always valued being able to connect with people in that way.

What I began noticing, though, was that I could remain compassionate without feeling the need to carry everything I encountered.

I could listen to someone else's experience without making it my own.

And I could appreciate that something mattered deeply to another person, even when it wasn't something I needed to become emotionally involved in.

That distinction felt meaningful to me.

Not because I'd suddenly learned something new, but because I could recognize how naturally years of reflection and personal growth were showing up in my everyday life.

Sometimes we don't realize how much we've changed until we find ourselves in a familiar moment and recognize that we're experiencing it differently.

The Space to Observe

The more attention I gave to those moments, the more curious I became about the quieter ways our energy can be drawn away from us.

A conversation that stays with us longer than we intended. A passing frustration that follows us into the next part of our day. Something relatively small that somehow finds its way into far more of our thoughts than we ever meant to give it.

I've certainly experienced my share of those moments.

And I've also come to appreciate what happens when I allow myself a little space to observe before responding.

That doesn't mean I always get it right.

There are still times when I react before I've had an opportunity to consider how I want to participate in something.

But I've become more comfortable recognizing those moments without being hard on myself.

What matters to me is that I'm noticing.

Because when I become aware of where my attention is going, I have an opportunity to consider whether I want to continue giving it there.

And sometimes that awareness is enough to change how I experience the rest of my day.

Holding My Light

I've always been drawn to the way sunlight moves through the trees.

The softness of the light filtering between branches, finding its way into spaces that might otherwise remain in shadow.

Lately, I've been carrying an image of that light with me.

I imagine myself surrounded by a gentle bubble of light.

Not something that separates me from the world, but something that reminds me of the space I want to maintain within myself.

It's a simple visualization, yet I've found comfort in it.

When I picture that light surrounding me, I'm reminded that I can remain open to the world without feeling the need to absorb everything happening around me.

I can listen, participate, and connect while remaining aware of my own energy.

I think about the way trees stand through changing weather.

They experience calm days and powerful winds, yet they remain rooted in the earth beneath them.

There's something comforting about that image.

It reminds me that I don't need everything around me to be peaceful before I can experience a sense of calm within myself.

And caring for my own energy doesn't mean closing myself off from life.

Quite the opposite.

It allows me to remain connected to the world while being more intentional about how I experience it.

Making Room for What Lights My Soul

As I've been reflecting on the spaces I want to create, I've found myself thinking about what I want to welcome into them.

I've been saying something for a while now that continues to feel increasingly meaningful to me.

I want to spend more of my time doing things that light my soul up rather than diminish the light within it.

And the more I sit with that intention, the more I appreciate what it means.

I'm not looking for a life without responsibilities or challenges.

Some of the most worthwhile experiences I've had have asked a great deal of me.

But I've come to recognize a difference between giving my energy to something that challenges me in a meaningful way and continually giving it to something that leaves me feeling diminished.

I want to remain curious about the experiences that bring me alive.

The opportunities to connect with people, explore unfamiliar places, and discover something I hadn't considered before.

My recent travels were a beautiful reminder of how much meaning can come from remaining open.

Some of the moments that touched me most were simple exchanges of kindness, generosity, and connection.

And I know those experiences aren't limited to traveling somewhere new.

Life offers opportunities for connection in the most ordinary places.

Sometimes all it takes is a little curiosity and a willingness to welcome something unexpected.

I don't need to know exactly what those experiences will become.

There's something wonderful about allowing life to surprise me.

The Spaces Others Help Us Open

One of the things I've been feeling especially grateful for is the opportunity to experience life through perspectives different from my own.

Woman looking upward beside a forest waterfall, appreciating the beauty of nature and meaningful life experiences.

I've crossed paths with people whose stories and experiences have expanded my understanding of the world.

Some have become lasting relationships, while others have been brief encounters that somehow left a lasting impression.

And sometimes what stays with me isn't even something that was spoken.

It's the warmth of an interaction.

The kindness exchanged between strangers.

The feeling of being welcomed into a moment that I might never have experienced otherwise.

I encountered so much of that during my recent travels.

Those experiences reminded me how much there is to appreciate when we remain curious about the lives unfolding around us.

We don't have to share the same circumstances or experiences to find meaning in what someone else has to offer.

Sometimes simply being welcomed into another person's world allows us to see beyond what we've personally known.

And in doing so, we may discover that a little more space has opened within us, too.

A Moment to Reflect

As I've been considering the spaces I'm opening in my own life, I've realized that making room doesn't always mean deciding what belongs there.

Sometimes it means becoming more aware of what I'm already giving my time and attention to.

Other times, it means recognizing that I don't need to fill every opening simply because it exists.

I can appreciate the life I'm living while remaining curious about what I haven't yet experienced.

I can be thoughtful about where my energy goes without needing to know exactly what comes next.

And I can allow some spaces to remain open long enough for life to meet me there.

Perhaps there's a little room in your life waiting to be recognized, too.

What has been bringing you alive lately?

And where might you welcome a little more space for it?

Let There Be Room

Life will continue moving.

There will be responsibilities to meet, unexpected challenges to navigate, and moments when the world around us feels louder than we'd like.

But somewhere within all of that, there is still a life that belongs to each of us.

A life with room for curiosity, meaningful connections, and experiences that remind us how wonderful it can be to feel fully alive.

My hope is that you'll continue discovering what lights your soul up and recognize the value of giving those things a place in your life.

May you remain open to the people and experiences that expand your world while staying connected to the light that is uniquely yours.

And may the spaces you open become places where you feel free to experience life in ways that are meaningful to you.

Walk slowly, breathe deeply, and may you always Find Your Way2Vyb.
