Finding Your Way Home
There are moments in life when we look around and realize we've spent years searching for something we thought was somewhere out in front of us.
A better version of ourselves.
A different life.
A future where everything finally makes sense.
We tell ourselves that once we heal, once we have the answers, once life settles down, then we'll finally feel at peace.
For a long time, I believed that too.
Then, during one of the most uncertain seasons of my life, someone shared a simple phrase with me:
"Things don't happen to me. They happen for me."

At first, I wasn't convinced.
The words didn't erase the uncertainty I was living through, and they certainly didn't make life easier.
But they did something unexpected.
They made me curious.
Instead of asking, Why is this happening to me? I slowly began asking different questions.
What might this experience be asking of me?
Who am I becoming because I've lived through this?
That quiet shift in perspective didn't change my circumstances overnight.
It changed the way I met them.
Over the years, I've realized something I never expected.
Growth wasn't asking me to become someone new.
It was gently inviting me to remember someone I'd lost touch with.
Through walking.
Through writing.
Through time in nature.
Through meditation.
Through slowing down long enough to hear my own thoughts again.
I discovered that beneath the expectations, responsibilities, fear, and survival was someone who had been patiently waiting all along.
Not forgotten.
Not broken.
Simply waiting to be met with compassion.
One of the most meaningful parts of that journey happened during meditation.
Sometimes old memories would quietly return—not to pull me backward, but to allow me to meet them with the perspective and compassion I didn't yet have when I first lived them.
Eventually I realized something that changed me.
The younger versions of ourselves don't need us to rescue them.
They need us to stop leaving them behind.
That realization transformed the way I understood healing.
It wasn't about erasing the past.
It wasn't about pretending difficult seasons never happened.
It was about allowing every version of myself to finally belong.
The more I reflected on that, the more I began noticing the same pattern everywhere.
In my annual New Year's pilgrimage.
In everyday moments.
Even in something as simple as removing the television from my bedroom and creating a space for stillness instead.
Life wasn't asking me to become someone else.
It was inviting me to make a little more room for who I already was.
I think that's something many of us are quietly longing for.
Not another version of ourselves.
Just permission to come home.
Your path may look completely different than mine.
Maybe you find yourself through music.
Gardening.
Prayer.
Art.
Running.
Long conversations.
Or watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee in your hands.
There isn't one right path.
There never could be.
The beauty is in discovering your own.
Because your life was never meant to be lived exactly like someone else's.
It was always meant to become uniquely yours.
If there's one thing I hope you take away from this reflection, it's this:
You don't have to become someone worthy of coming home.
You already belong.
Perhaps the journey has never been about becoming someone new.
Perhaps it's simply been about remembering the person who has been patiently waiting beneath it all.
And maybe...
today is a beautiful day to begin walking back.
